Laguindingan International Airport Update 2011-2012

by admin on April 18, 2012

The Laguindingan International Airport was previously set for completion last year – end of 2011 and supposed to be operational last January 2012. However, the project is still observed to be under 70-80% complete as of March 2012 (last month). Knowing the project still has three major components that needs to be accomplished – the civil works, navigation system and support facilities, I believe this project will be fully functional & operational in October or 4th quarter of this year 2012 .

As we recalled ast year, a five-person team from the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF) conducted an appraisal mission on Laguidingan International Airport Development Project (LIADP)-Air Navigational Aids System. The team also visited the Lumbia Airport Control Tower in barangay Lumbia, Cagayan de Oro City, to appraise the air navigation system equipment. As an update, the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) is now currently acquiring all the required navigational aids, equipments and facilities needed by Laguindingan Airport project. New released funds was provided by the Korean Export-Import (Kexim) Bank for the acquisition of these expensive equipments.

With the continuing construction of the Laguindingan International Airport which is located in the Municipality of Laguindingan, it is expected to accommodate 1.6 million passengers a year and will be the international gateway to the Cagayan de Oro-Iligan corridor, touted to be a major growth area. Having an airport with international standard, business analyst forecasts more entry of foreign and local investments and an increase in tourism activity in the region. Eventually, it will brand Cagayan de Oro as of the chief cities in the southern part of the Philippines.

We all know major airports will become key nodes in global production and enterprise systems offering them speed, agility, and connectivity. Airport are also powerful engines of local economic development, attracting aviation-linked businesses of all types. These include, among others, time-sensitive manufacturing and distribution facilities; hotel, entertainment, retail, convention, trade and exhibition complexes; and office buildings that house air-travel intensive executives and professionals. This is called AEROTROPOLIS.

AEROTROPOLIS – In other words, a new urban form placing airports in the center with cities growing around them, connecting workers, suppliers, executives, and goods to the global marketplace. This Laguindingan International Airport Project was conceptualize using Aerotropolis approach except that the airport is not settled on the center.

This is actually a brilliant concept/model of an airport however, the real question is NOT whether Aerotropolises will evolve around Laguindingan International Airport (which I am pretty sure, they will) but it is whether they will form and grow in an intelligent manner, minimizing problems and bringing about the greatest returns to the airport, its users, businesses, surrounding communities, and the larger region it serves. Pinoy pa? 😀

Don’t hold your breath regarding the opening of this white elephant. It will not be operational until 2014 at the earliest. It is not close to Cagayan, it’s in the middle of nowhere, the current airport, Lumbia, is in Cagayan and its a 15 minute drive to downtown. The new airport will be at least an hours drive to Cagayan on very poor roads. They have only just started discussing the navigational aids for the airport !! It was supposed to open 2 years ago so why didn’t they discuss navaids in 2008 or 2009 ?? The incompetence of the people running this project is incredible, absolute useless people.

I from Iligan City and now in New Jersey, USA. The concept of an International Airport for Northern Mindanao was deliberated way back in the 1070-1990 while I was commuting between Iligan City and Cagayan De Oro City and attending regularly for NMYC-DOL of Region X in the Northern Mindanao Development Conferences spearheaded by the NEDA, Region X. The concept was given attention with the establishment of the Cagayan De Oro- Iligan Corridor for the purpose of sharing the already fast growing Cagayan De Oro Development into a Highly Urbanized Metropolitan Center for the Northern Mindanao along the Mindanao Sea Regions. The Highway and Light Railway components to improve the Transportation and Communication for Business & Tourism growth may soon follow.

If it took several decades and years to wait for its realization, we all can wait for another few months
for it to be operational.
to wait for this Project to be realized we can still wait for less than a year to open it
